CHAPTER TWELVE

LENA

The match kicked off with a screech of sound as the buzzer signaled the players into motion. The ref dropped the puck, and the players immediately attacked.

Watching David in the arena, watching the way his body moved, how he twisted himself to follow the puck and keep the other team from claiming it...all I could think about was the hotness.

The feeling of him between my legs.

I hadn’t known what I’d been missing.

Sex with my douche ex had never really been something I’d write home about. He’d never taken the time to see to my needs, only ever concerned about getting himself off. The first time we’d gone on a date...I’d said no. I’d tried to put that boundary in place because I wasn’t sure how I felt about sleeping with someone on the first date. And losing my virginity to them? Worse.

Instead, he’d battered down my boundaries and scooped me up in his arms, claiming this is happening. Like nothing I said mattered to him because he knew best. And although I’d wanted it, although I’d wanted him, he hadn’t respected me.

There had been some good moments. There had been worse moments.

I’d wanted to end it. But the people love you together, my father insisted. I’d let myself be swayed by that.

When did it start to matter what was best for me?

Not even the best of the good moments with the ex compared to how it felt with David. He always tried his best to make sure I experienced just as much as he did in the bedroom. He took the time. He did it right. He asked me questions—in itself a miracle, considering the man didn’t say much—and he got to know me. Intimately.

He’d run through my list of fantasies without blinking. And if I ever felt uncomfortable with anything, he stopped immediately.

At least I had this game off so I could actually watch the guys play and root for them rather than busting my butt. Marc’s alternate, Ricardo, had the honor of playing Foxy today, although I knew Marc would rather not give Ricardo too many shifts.

The guy was gunning for the job, after all. I was tired, and while I was willing to help Marc, I wasn’t risking an injury to keep his secret.

I rooted for the Raiders as well as the rest of the families in the personal booth. None of them even questioned me being there, which was nice. None of them treated me like I was untouchable or made of glass or like I was in a different sphere.

No, the ladies took me into their fold with no questions asked. Each of them had sent me a message or two after the press incident, and I’d really appreciated it. Because of playing Foxy and hanging with David, I hadn’t seen much of them lately. I assumed they thought I was in hiding, which made it easier.

How many miracles did I deserve?

What a difference from this time last year, I thought with a laugh, bundling my jacket around me and howling out in support of Wayne and Seamus.
